John M. Artz, PhD is a retired professor of information systems whose research interests were in the philosophical foundations of information systems. The same analytical techniques that were applied to topics such as database design are now being applied to topics of more general interest in an easy (hopefully) conversational style. In simple terms, we begin with a concept X and ask the question “What is X”. This approach goes all the way back to Socrates who frequently asked the question “What is X” in Plato’s dialogues replacing X with Justice, Virtue, and other similar topics. Today it is a tool used in analytical philosophy to clarify language which is viewed as the source of most, if not all, philosophical problems.
